# Ethereum to Optimism Bridge: Step by Step Tutorial

Running an Ethereum to Optimism Bridge transaction shifts your balance off the main network in between 2 and 8 minutes from the moment you confirm.

Connecting through [Rezentix](https://rezentix.com/) lets you move ETH directly to the Layer 2 rollup without sorting through complex smart contract menus.

Optimism is an Ethereum scaling network that processes transactions off the main chain and posts compressed proofs back to Ethereum, cutting everyday swap fees by more than 90%. Your existing wallet address works on both sides automatically.

### Ethereum to Optimism Bridge Process

Follow these six steps to move your ETH balance onto Optimism without overpaying for gas.

Step 1: Prepare your browser wallet on Ethereum mainnet. Open MetaMask or Rabby, check that your network selector is set to Ethereum Mainnet, and verify that your ETH balance covers both your transfer amount and $4 to $9 in gas reserves.

Step 2: [Rezentix](https://rezentix.com/) loads the cross-chain route selector directly in your browser. Set Ethereum as your source network, choose Optimism as your destination chain, and click the connect button to link your wallet.

Step 3: Type the amount of ETH you want to move. Enter your transfer figure and avoid clicking the maximum balance button, since draining your wallet to zero leaves nothing to pay the mainnet transaction fee.

Step 4: Inspect the quoted gas cost and final payout. Look at the net ETH amount scheduled to arrive on Optimism and check that the protocol spread stays below 0.20% before proceeding.

Step 5: Approve the transaction inside your wallet popup. Confirm the gas fee in your wallet extension when sending Ethereum to Optimism, then wait for the mainnet broadcast confirmation to appear on screen.

Step 6: Switch your wallet network to OP Mainnet to view your funds. Click the network switch prompt once the progress bar finishes, and confirm that your new Optimism ETH balance appears in your asset list.

### Settlement Speed and Where Delays Happen

Nearly all of your waiting time happens on the Ethereum mainnet side while validators finalize the deposit block.

Ethereum produces a new block roughly every 12 seconds, and cross-chain relayers wait for multiple block confirmations to make sure your deposit cannot be reorganized before releasing funds on the destination side.

Once Ethereum locks that deposit block, the Optimism sequencer credits your Layer 2 wallet in less than 10 seconds. No manual claim transactions afterward.

You can read more about how rollup sequencers batch and confirm incoming deposits in the official [Optimism documentation](https://optimism.io/). If your transfer takes closer to 8 minutes than 2 minutes, mainnet congestion is delaying block inclusion rather than any slowdown on the Optimism network.

### Checking Your Transfer Hash on an Explorer

Pasting your transaction hash into a block explorer gives you live proof of where your funds sit in the settlement queue.

The moment you sign the transfer in your wallet, the network generates a transaction hash—a unique 66-character receipt code starting with 0x that tracks your payment across the blockchain.

If the bridge screen doesn't update right away because your browser tab went to sleep, copy that hash from your wallet activity tab and paste it into a public explorer. You're able to see the exact block number, the gas price paid, and the confirmation count in real time.

Newcomers who want a clearer breakdown of how block confirmations and transaction receipts work can check the [Ethereum documentation](https://ethereum.org/) for a plain overview.

### Gas Costs and Signing Quotes

Standard transfers cost between $2 and $7 when you bridge Ethereum to Optimism during calm network hours, though the live quote shown in your wallet at the moment of signing always overrides any general estimate.

Mainnet gas fees fluctuate block by block based on how many people are trading NFTs, swapping tokens, or moving stablecoins at that exact second. Because static fee tables aren't able to predict a sudden surge in block demand, your wallet popup serves as the final source of truth.

If the wallet quote shows $11 during a busy afternoon window and you won't need the funds on Optimism until tomorrow, reject the prompt and try again later in the evening when fees drop back toward $2.50.

### Common Transfer Questions

#### Keeping the same wallet address on Optimism

Your wallet address stays identical across both Ethereum and Optimism. Because both networks share the Ethereum Virtual Machine account structure, the 0x address you use on mainnet automatically controls your funds on OP Mainnet using the same private key.

#### Why do Ethereum gas fees change during the day?

Block space demand drives every fee spike on the main network. When thousands of users compete to fit transactions into the next 12-second block, the base fee rises automatically, which is why late-night transfers often cost 50% less than midday transfers.

#### Weekend settlement speed compared to weekdays

Weekend transfers usually clear faster and cost less than weekday routes. Institutional trading volume drops on Saturday and Sunday, meaning your deposit transaction gets picked up in the very next Ethereum block for $1.80 to $3.50—and that's often the cheapest window all week.

[Rezentix](https://rezentix.com/) displays your exact Layer 2 payout before you approve the mainnet gas fee. Connect your wallet, check the live signing quote, and move your ETH balance to Optimism in a single pass. Your funds land ready for immediate use on Layer 2 apps.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://rataz.gitbook.io/how-to/ethereum-to-optimism-bridge/ethereum-to-optimism-bridge-step-by-step-tutorial.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
